The Recovery Friendly Workplace Movement

Led by The National Recovery Friendly Workplace Institute, this “recovery friendly” movement aims to reduce the impact of substance use and drug poisoning by guiding employers in supporting employees and their loved ones when managing substance use disorder (SUD) at any stage.

The 2026 White House National Drug Control Strategy  identified supporting recovery as a key component of a long-term response to SUD with an express goal to create a recovery friendly nation. To advance that goal, the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) convened the Federal Recovery [Friendly] Workplace Interagency Workgroup and developed a Recovery-Ready Workplace Toolkit.

In response to this White House effort, the already active grassroots movement of employers, advocates, elected officials, and service providers have joined forces to promote recovery in the workplace.

A “Recovery Friendly Workplace” (RFW) is a place of work in which the employer, in collaboration with employees, establishes, maintains, and continually enhances policies, practices, and a culture and work environment that are supportive of current and prospective employees in recovery from, or otherwise affected by, substance use disorders.

The National Recovery Friendly Workplace Institute is the only body that nationally-certifies employers as Recovery Friendly Workplaces. By equipping employers with tools to support individuals in recovery, we help businesses improve retention, productivity, and overall workplace culture.
